Mahatma Phule Mandai anchors the quarter. Walter Ducat and Vasudev Kanitkar drew it in Gothic style from local grey stone, work starting in 1882, and an octagonal tower still stands over the wings of stalls that radiate from the ground floor verandah. Acharya Atre had the Reay Market renamed for Jyotirao Phule in 1938.
Nehru Stadium closes the southern end, its two ends named for Tilak Road and Laxmi Road. The Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum sits off Bajirao Road, holding everyday Indian craft that Dr. Dinkar G. Kelkar gathered from around 1920.
What is the history of Shukrawar Peth?
Bajirao I named the ground in 1734, for Shukrawar, the Marathi word for Friday, on land that had been called Visapur. Soldiers held the ground before shopkeepers. A gun foundry and stables stood within it, alongside infantry lines, a gymnasium, and the military headquarters of the Peshwa army.
The British hanged Umaji Naik at the Mamledar Kacheri on 3 February 1832, and the samadhi of the Ramoshi leader occupies the building behind the Khadak police station. Wholesale trade left the market for Gultekdi in the late 1970s.
Where is Shukrawar Peth?
Pune's old city ends at Swargate. Mahatma Phule Mandai stands at the northern end of the peth, and the Satara road runs south out of the junction below it.
