Ludhiana was born on a river frontier. Chiefs of the Lodhi line founded a town by the Sutlej long ago and raised a fort above the river, and for centuries it stood on the shifting border between kingdoms and empires. Cloth made it grow.
In time its weavers and knitters became known for warm woollens and hosiery, and Ludhiana grew into a town of looms and needles on the Punjab plain. Hard years remade the city. When the land was split at Partition, waves of newcomers poured into Ludhiana and set to work, and the town's yards filled with bicycles, sewing machines, and knitted cloth carried across India.
