Visitors come for the Battle of Muktsar, and the older core of the city, the ground that carried the name Khidrana before 1705, is where a stay makes most sense, within reach of the places the battle is remembered at and of the streets that grew around them. That core is compact. Beyond it the city works as an administrative seat, and the lodging near the offices it took on as a district headquarters in 1995 is plainer, cheaper, and aimed at people whose business is paperwork rather than pilgrimage.
The district itself is farm country, and it holds one address that draws visitors on its own account. Matte-di-Sarai, written in the sources as Sarainaga too, is the village where Guru Angad was born, and it is reached as an outing from the city rather than stayed in, since a settlement of that size keeps no formal rooms. From the battle ground to the district offices is a short ride.
Anyone spending a night should also know that the city answers to two names, Sri Muktsar Sahib officially since 2012, Muktsar in ordinary speech, and that bookings, signs, and directions may use either without meaning anything different by it.

What is the history of Muktsar?
Before 1705 the place was Khidrana, recorded also as Khidrane di dhab, an ordinary name for an ordinary settlement on the Punjab plain. The Battle of Muktsar changed that. Fought in 1705, it left the city with the name Muktsar, and every later account of the place begins from that event rather than from anything preceding it.
The wider district carries an older Sikh association as well: Guru Angad, second of the Sikh Gurus, was born in the village of Matte-di-Sarai, which the sources also give as Sarainaga. Administrative history is more recent and easier to date. Muktsar was made a district headquarters in 1995, which turned a historical town into the working centre of the surrounding country.
Then the name changed again. In 2012 the government officially adopted Sri Muktsar Sahib, though the shorter Muktsar is still what most people in Punjab and the rest of India use for it, so the older form persists in speech while the newer one holds in the records. The 2011 census had counted the municipality shortly before that change, placing it among the larger cities of the state.

Two seasons matter here. The subtropical year over this part of Punjab brings a long spell of heat and a shorter cool one, and the farming villages around Muktsar, Matte-di-Sarai among them, arrange their work and their visiting around that split rather than around four measured seasons. Commemorations of the Battle of Muktsar fall in the cooler part of the year, which is also when a walk through the old Khidrana streets is comfortable rather than an endurance.

Approaches are from within Punjab, which is what a district headquarters set among farmland comes to: roads run in from the surrounding towns and villages, and the city sits at the point they converge on because the administration of the district is here. Ask for either name. Signs and tickets may carry Sri Muktsar Sahib, the official form since 2012, or the older Muktsar.
Matte-di-Sarai is a short run out from the city for anyone continuing to the birthplace of Guru Angad.
