Where to stay in Hāthras

The practical side of choosing where to sleep.

Hathras is a working district town, not a place set up for travellers. The older quarter gathers around the fort ruins at the eastern end, where a temple to Balram once stood inside the walls. Four railway stations serve it.

Most people who come are here for the district offices, or for the Lakkha Mela at Dau Baba. Kaka Hathrasi, the satirical poet, came from here.

About Hāthras

Hathras is known for its fort.

What is Hāthras known for?

The ruins of Raja Dayaram Singh's fort sit at the eastern end of the city, and the railway station takes its name from them, Hathras Qila. Inside those walls stood a temple to Balram, and the Lakkha Mela still gathers each year at the shrine people call Dau Baba. Digging around the city has turned up Hindu, Buddhist and Jain remains, together with Shunga and Kushan material and a clay Sapta Matrika figure.

What are the main landmarks in Hāthras?

The fort of Raja Dayaram Singh is the one monument that defines the city, ruined but still standing at the eastern end. Inside it, the temple of Balram draws the Lakkha Mela every year. Hathras Qila station carries the name.

What is the history of Hāthras?

Jat rulers held this region before the city took shape. Badan Singh, son of the Thenua raja Jai Singh, took over from them in 1716, and his son Bhuri Singh followed him at Hathras. Bhuri Singh's sons Nawal Singh and Raja Dayaram Singh ruled after that, and Dayaram Singh was crowned in 1775.

Madhavrao I Sindhia established Maratha rule over the Hathras country in 1784. The British took the region in 1803, but the fort held out and had to be besieged in 1817. No document says who built it.

Where is Hāthras?

Hathras stands on the plains of Uttar Pradesh, with the district it governs spreading around it. Older ruins lie southwest. The older fort marks the eastern end of the city, and the railway station there carries its name.

What is the climate of Hāthras?

Hathras has a subtropical climate with sharply divided seasons. Long hot months build through spring before the monsoon breaks. The monsoon then soaks the plains and washes the heat out of the air before it passes.

Winters run short and cool.

How do you get to Hāthras?

Four railway stations serve Hathras, the best known of them Hathras Qila, named for the fort. Roads carry the rest. The Lakkha Mela is the one time of year the town fills up.
