Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Piazza Nicola Amore is the corner to steer by, the point where Via Duomo crosses Corso Umberto I. A room in Pendino puts Sant'Agostino alla Zecca, San Severo al Pendino and San Giorgio Maggiore within a few streets, with Piazza Mercato and Santa Maria del Carmine a walk south. The quartiere is small. Beds run to guesthouses and apartments in old buildings rather than large hotels.
The Naples Cathedral and Castel Capuano stand outside it, a few blocks north in San Lorenzo.

Churches dominate the count. Santa Maria del Carmine closes the east side of Piazza Mercato, Santa Croce e Purgatorio al Mercato stands free at the centre of the square, and Sant'Eligio Maggiore and San Giovanni a Mare hold the streets toward the port. North of Corso Umberto I stand Sant'Agostino alla Zecca, San Severo al Pendino, San Giorgio Maggiore on Via Duomo, Sant'Agrippino a Forcella and the Vanvitelli-rebuilt Santissima Annunziata Maggiore.
Santi Filippo e Giacomo, the silk weavers' church, stands on via San Biagio dei Librai. Pio Monte della Misericordia keeps Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy at the upper edge.
What is the history of Pendino?
The Greek wall once ran through here. A stretch of it still shows at Piazza Vincenzo Calenda, and Allied bombing in 1943 uncovered Roman baths at Vico dei Mannesi. Piazza Mercato carried the city's public deaths: Conradin of Swabia was beheaded on it in 1268, and the revolt of Masaniello broke out from the same ground in 1647.
Francesco Securo gave the square its present exedra late in the eighteenth century. The Risanamento then drove Corso Umberto I straight through the quartiere, opening Piazza Nicola Amore where Via Duomo crosses.
Where is Pendino?
Pendino slopes from Forcella, which it shares with San Lorenzo, down toward the port, with Corso Garibaldi closing it to the east.
