The hill is the point. Vomero stands above the rest of Naples, and a room here trades the noise of the old lanes for quiet streets, the Certosa di San Martino and the long view from Castel Sant'Elmo at the top of the quarter. Chiaia lies below. Santa Teresa a Chiaia, San Giuseppe a Chiaia and the Chiesa dell'Ascensione a Chiaia mark that lower ground, while the Museo Nazionale della Ceramica Duca di Martina keeps its collection up on the hill.

Castel Sant'Elmo crowns it. The fortress and the Certosa di San Martino share the summit with the Museo Nazionale di San Martino, and below them the Museo Nazionale della Ceramica Duca di Martina, the Museo d'arte della fondazione Pagliara and the Museo Napoli Novecento carry the quarter's collections. Museums keep multiplying here.
The Museo delle carrozze, the Museo della Moda Napoli - Mondragone Foundation, PLART and the Museo Principe Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortés add to them, alongside Villa Pignatelli and the Museo PAN. A Roman bridge and a Colombarium survive from much earlier.
What is the history of Vomero?
Vomero was not always built up. A Roman bridge and a Colombarium survive on the hill from antiquity, evidence that people used this high ground long before the quarter above Naples took its present shape. Castel Sant'Elmo came with the fortifying centuries, and the Certosa di San Martino settled beside it as a monastic house.
The monastero di Maria Santissima Assunta belongs to the same religious line. Churches spread down toward Chiaia: San Nicola da Tolentino, Santa Maria della Pazienza, Santa Maria della Neve in San Giuseppe and San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini.
