About Acradina

Where to stay in Acradina

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Acradina is a residential quarter on the Siracusa mainland north of Ortygia, so a stay here means an apartment off viale Tica rather than a room among the monuments. Viale Zecchino branches from viale Tica. The trade is distance: viale Teracati runs south-west to the archaeological park at Neapolis, and Ortygia lies further south again.

In exchange come parking and green ground at Parco Papa Giovanni Paolo II, which drops below the scarp at the quarter's eastern edge. If you are travelling with children and cooking your own meals, this end of Siracusa suits you.

About Acradina

What are the main landmarks in Acradina?

Acradina keeps its oldest ground at the southern end, where limestone was cut away to build the Greek city. Quarries open off via Latomia del Casale. The Latomia del Casale and the Latomia Broggi are overgrown hollows in that rock, and the Latomia dei Cappuccini lies about 300 metres east of them, over the boundary in Grottasanta.

Torre di Bosco Minniti stands a kilometre north, a defensive tower shut inside a residential courtyard. Parco Papa Giovanni Paolo II opens at the eastern edge, and the Sacro Cuore di Gesù parish church faces Piazza Giovanni Ventitreesimo. Piazza Marcello Sgarlata holds the Wednesday market.

What is the history of Acradina?

Acradina was one of the five quarters of Greek Syracuse, and its name comes from akhras, the wild pear that grew on this ground. A gate of Achradina ended the siege of 213-212 BC. One of the quarter's own prefects opened it to the Romans, who took the citadel and sacked it behind him.

Only Ortygia stayed inhabited through the Middle Ages, and Acradina filled again with the northward building of the twentieth century, which turned the wood at Bosco Minniti into apartment blocks. Nine circoscrizioni governed Siracusa until 2018. Acradina had been one of them since 1977.

Where is Acradina?

Acradina occupies the middle of the Siracusa mainland, between Tiche on the west and Grottasanta on the east, with viale Teracati along its south-western edge and the quarries above via Latomia del Casale at its lower end.
