What are the main landmarks in Tenyamachi?

The Hakata Promenade of History passes through. It is the walking route laid out across the old merchant town, and Tenyamachi is one of the stretches it covers. A festival flow claims the town.

Tenyamachi belongs to the Nishi-nagare, one of the units the Hakata Gion Yamakasa is run in, and the festival fills the first fortnight of July as an offering at Kushida shrine. Seven hectares make up the whole. The town is bounded by the Taihaku-dori to the north-east and the Meiji-dori to the north-west, which is what keeps it so compact.

What is the history of Tenyamachi?

A fish market gave the town its name. In the days of the harbour called Sode no Minato a market for fish stood in neighbouring Uonomachi, various shops opened on this ground beside it, and the town took its name from them. The air raid took everything in 1945.

What is now Tenyamachi burned, and the streets were rebuilt after the war. Boundaries were redrawn in 1966. Parts of Koshoji, Shimo-Akanmachi, Hakuyamachi and a dozen other old towns were absorbed into Tenyamachi that year, which is how the single-name town now on the map was made.

The old names survive in the road nicknames.

Where is Tenyamachi?

Tenyamachi covers about seven hectares in the north-west of Hakata ward in Fukuoka, bordering Kamigofukumachi across the Taihaku-dori, Reisenmachi to the south-east, Kamikawabatamachi to the south-west and Tsunabamachi across the Meiji-dori.
