Akihabara, Tokyo — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Akihabara, or Akiba, is the Electric Town of Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, a grid of electronics counters and anime shops.

About Akihabara

Where to stay in Akihabara

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Two moods split the Akihabara blocks. Rooms either side of Akihabara Station put the Electric Town counters, the game and anime shops and the weekend crowds directly under the window, which suits a stay built around browsing rather than sleeping in. Sotokanda runs calmer after dark.

Beds towards Kanda-Sakumachō and the Akihabara Neribei Park end keep the same counters within a short walk, and put the Meiji University Museum and the Transportation Museum inside an easy morning.

About Akihabara

What are the main landmarks in Akihabara?

Akihabara counts collections rather than monuments. The Transportation Museum and the Meiji University Museum stand in the surrounding Chiyoda blocks, and the Tokyo Waterworks Historical Museum, the Japan Football Museum and the National Archives of Modern Architecture fill out an unusually dense run of small collections. Among them sit the Shitamachi Museum and 神田の家.

Further out lie the Takagi Bonsai Museum, the Daiichi Sankyo Kusuri Museum, the Mitsui Memorial Museum and the Currency Museum of the Bank of Japan, four more small houses within the same reach.

What is the history of Akihabara?

The name covers two places. The shopping quarter around Akihabara Station took the label Electric Town for its counters of computers, gaming consoles, vacuums and DVDs, while the administrative district of the same name lies north of it around Akihabara Neribei Park. Slang shortened it to Akiba.

Trade in electronics drew the anime and manga business alongside it, and the weekend crowds of otaku who gave the area its second identity became known as Akiba-kei. Chiyoda administers all of it.

Where is Akihabara?

Akihabara covers the Sotokanda and Kanda-Sakumachō blocks on the eastern side of central Chiyoda, with Akihabara Neribei Park at its northern edge.
