The whole district is flat. It sits on backswamp south of the Arakawa and the Shingashi river, and its streets cross at right angles except in the fifth chome, so an address is easy to find. Two chome are mostly estate.
The Takashimadaira Danchi fills about two thirds of the second and half of the third, rented in one and sold in the other. Shops gather at the north exit of the station.

What are the main landmarks in Takashimadaira?
The name is the monument here. Takashima Shuhan gave the first public demonstration of Western-style gunnery and musket formation in Japan on this ground in 1841, when it was called Tokumaru-ga-hara, and the district took his surname when it was named. It was decided in 1965.
The estate plan was approved that year, and the ward announced the name Takashimadaira in its bulletin on 20 October 1968. Culverts carry the old streams. The Maeyatsu river and its tributaries all run underground now, with promenades laid along the top of them.
What is the history of Takashimadaira?
Tokumaru-ga-hara was farmland for a long time. Most of it belonged to Akatsuka village in the Kita-Toshima district until the Taisho era, and on 14 November 1871 the greater part passed from Urawa prefecture into Tokyo. A greening designation held it open.
The area was designated a green zone under the special city planning law in July 1948, and Tokyo indicated in 1958 that it would lift the designation if a land readjustment project were carried out. Preparation began in 1962. The development council for the old Akatsuka paddy area was formed that May, the readjustment area was fixed in June 1965, and work on the Toei subway line six started that December.
The plan grew taller in 1969. Five-storey mid-rise had been intended when the housing corporation took the project in 1966, but in July 1969 it was changed to fourteen-storey blocks, and the station was renamed Takashimadaira on 1 August that year. Occupancy began in January 1972.

Takashimadaira covers about three hundred and thirteen hectares in the north of Itabashi ward, south of the Arakawa and the Shingashi river, bordering Shingashi, Mizono, Daimon, Tokumaru, Nishidai and Hasune.
