Mornings decide the choice here. Beds within reach of Jukdo Market let a visitor be among the fish stalls while the boats are still unloading, which is the one part of Pohang that rewards an early alarm and the reason most short stays cluster in those blocks. The market sets the hours.
Anything else in the city can be reached later in the day without much difficulty, so proximity to the stalls is worth more than proximity to anywhere else. The shoreline offers a different kind of night. Rooms out along the East Sea front put the sculpture 상생의 손 and the open water within a walk, trading market noise for surf, and they suit anyone who wants the coast rather than the commerce.
Yangdeok Sports Town anchors a third option inland. That side of the city is quieter and more residential, useful for longer stays and for anyone with business in North Gyeongsang Province rather than at the harbour, and it keeps the road toward Gyeongju straightforward. Neither coast nor town is far.
Pohang spreads widely between the works, the market and the shore, but the three sit close enough that a single base covers all of them.

What is Pohang known for?
Jukdo Market is the name that reaches beyond the district, one of the busiest fresh-fish markets in Korea and the place most visitors are sent to first, and around it Pohang carries on as a major industrial city on the East Sea. The sculpture 상생의 손 stands on the shore. Inland the Youngil Folk Museum keeps the older material of the area, while the Bukcheonsu Grove in Buksong-ri, Pohang shows what the coast looked like before the works.

What is the history of Pohang?
Villages came before the city. The heritage list of Pohang is dominated by things scattered across former farming settlements rather than concentrated in one old centre: memorial steles including the 원리 정몽주 유허비 and the 현내리 신라아찬유공 유허비, the pavilions 우각리 오의정 and 금곡리 삼효각, and the temples recorded together as the Yugye-ri Sangdeoksa Temple and Juknimsa Temple. Households left their own record.
The old house 포항 여연당 고택 and the 덕성리 이상재 belong to that domestic layer, and the tug-of-war tradition 화진리 구진마을 앉은 줄다리기 survives from the same village world. The sea changed the balance. A coast facing the East Sea gave the settlements a fishing economy that Jukdo Market still expresses, and industry later made the place a major manufacturing city and the largest in North Gyeongsang Province, which sits at odds with the rural texture of everything on the heritage register.
Pohang's beginnings carry no single date. What the Youngil Folk Museum gathers is the material of the earlier world, kept beside a working harbour, and the shoreline sculpture 상생의 손 is a modern addition to a shore whose older markers are steles in fields.
Where is Pohang?
Water on one side, hills and neighbours on the others. Pohang borders the East Sea to the east, Yeongcheon to the west, Gyeongju to the south, and Cheongsong and Yeongdeok County to the north, which makes it the coastal corner of North Gyeongsang Province rather than a place on the way between two others. The shoreline does the defining.
Behind it the ground breaks into the valleys and villages that hold the Bukcheonsu Grove in Buksong-ri, Pohang and the scattered steles of the district.
What is the climate of Pohang?
Everything here is negotiated with the East Sea, whose water holds the coast of Pohang closer to an even temperature than the inland valleys toward Yeongcheon manage in the same temperate northern year. Sea fog can close the shore. Warmth peaks around midsummer and falls away at both ends of the calendar, and the fishing that supplies Jukdo Market works through all of it.

How do you get to Pohang?
Gyeongju is the usual door. Approaches from the south run up through it, while the inland route arrives from Yeongcheon and the coastal one comes down past Yeongdeok County, so Pohang is reached from three directions overland and from the East Sea by water. The harbour handles the shipping.
Most visitors come for one morning at Jukdo Market and leave the same day, which the road connections make easy enough.
