Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Gohyeon and Okpo split the island. Gohyeon holds Samsung Heavy Industries and the walls of Geoje Gohyeonseong, which makes it the practical base for anyone whose visit is business first and coastline second. Okpo is the other centre.
Hanwha Ocean and Okpo Stadium stand there, and Okpo-dong gives the second of the island's two urban concentrations, so a stay that wants shops and rooms rather than a cove picks between these two and little else. The coves argue against both. Hakdong-ri, where the Geoje Hakdong-ri Camellia Forest and Pale-colored Bird Breeding Site is protected, sits away from either city, and a room out there trades convenience for the string of calm coves and pine-forested cliffs that runs beyond the built-up ground.
Jangpyeongdong is the third dong on the list. Museums decide some stays outright, since the Haegeumgang Theme Museum, the Geoje Folk Museum and the Geoje POW Camp are fixed addresses rather than places anyone stumbles into from a beach. Sanctuary of Red-throated Loons on Geoje Coast marks another stretch worth being near, and the choice finally comes down to whether the island is a workplace, a museum trip or a shoreline.

What is Kyosai known for?
Beyond the two cities the shore runs as a series of calm coves and pine-forested grey cliffs, and that coastline is the reason most people cross to Geoje Island at all. Industry occupies the other register. Hanwha Ocean stands at Okpo and Samsung Heavy Industries at Gohyeon, while the Geoje POW Camp and the Geoje Folk Museum carry what visitors come inland for.

What is the history of Kyosai?
Walls came first. Geoje Gohyeonseong, 거제 사등성 and Geoje Jangmunpo Waeseong are the three fortified sites recorded on the island, and their names carry the older layer of a place that industry has since rebuilt around Gohyeon and Okpo. Then came the camp.
The Geoje POW Camp records a chapter of confinement on the island, and the Geoje Folk Museum holds the ordinary island past alongside it. Geoje was formerly romanised as Koje, and 거제시 is the municipal form. Shipbuilding reordered the island.
Hanwha Ocean at Okpo and Samsung Heavy Industries at Gohyeon are the two industrial concerns the island is described by, and they sit in the same dong that hold most of its rooms, shops and stadiums. Busan is close. The city sits near that mainland centre and is itself made up of a number of islands, of which Geoje Island is by far the largest, with Jangpyeongdong, Okpo-dong and Gohyeon among the dong that divide it.
Camellias and loons outlasted all of it. The Geoje Hakdong-ri Camellia Forest and Pale-colored Bird Breeding Site and the Sanctuary of Red-throated Loons on Geoje Coast are protected ground, older business than anything working at Okpo.
Where is Kyosai?
This is an island city. Geoje Island is by far the largest of the several islands that make up the municipality, and roughly 402 square kilometres of Gyeongsangnam-do fall inside a boundary drawn almost entirely around water. The shore does the work.
Calm coves alternate with sheer pine-forested grey cliffs beyond the built-up ground at Gohyeon and Okpo, and the Sanctuary of Red-throated Loons on Geoje Coast marks one stretch of that edge.
What is the climate of Kyosai?
Water moderates everything here. An island in the subtropical band takes its weather off the sea before anything else, and the coves and cliffs that ring Geoje take the brunt of whatever comes in off the water. Camellias mark the mild end.
A protected camellia forest at Hakdong-ri and a loon sanctuary along Geoje Coast both sit on that same maritime edge, and the Haegeumgang Theme Museum, the Geoje Folk Museum and the Geoje POW Camp cover a day when it turns wet.
How do you get to Kyosai?
Busan is the mainland reference. Geoje lies near that city, and an arrival from the Korean mainland is the normal way in for a municipality made up of a number of islands rather than one continuous stretch of ground. Then the island spreads out.
Gohyeon, Okpo-dong and Jangpyeongdong are the dong the city is divided among, while Hakdong-ri and the Geoje Coast sanctuary sit out along an edge that roughly 402 square kilometres puts at a real distance from either town.
