What is the history of Miryang?
Miryang has long been a town of the Nakdong country. An old walled seat on the river, it guarded the roads of the southeast and grew as a market and a place of scholars, with a Confucian school and a fortress above the water. A great pavilion crowned the bluff.
The Yeongnamnu was raised on the cliff over the river, a hall for poets and officials, counted among the finest pavilions in the land. The town honoured a warrior monk. From near Miryang came Samyeongdang, the monk who led soldiers against the invaders in the great war of the sixteenth century, and the town keeps his shrine at Pyochungsa.
Song carried the name of Miryang far. The Miryang Arirang, a lilting folk tune of the region, was sung across Korea and abroad, so the town's name travelled with it. The pavilion still stands on the bluff.
