Colonia del Valle is a place to live rather than a hotel quarter. Avenida Insurgentes carries most of the through traffic, and the shopping streets and restaurants on either side of it give the colonia its pull for anyone basing here for several weeks rather than a weekend. Beds run thin.
Visitors more often book in the neighbouring colonias, Nápoles to the west or Narvarte across Insurgentes, and walk in for the Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros.

Four named sights sit here. The Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros leads them, a cultural venue counted among the landmarks of Mexico City and the single best-known address in this part of the Benito Juárez borough. The parish church is the Iglesia de la Medalla de la Virgen Milagrosa.
Two smaller institutions complete the set, the Planetario Joaquín Gallo and the Museo de Arte en Azúcar México.
What is the history of Colonia del Valle?
The colonia began as a retreat for the capital's aristocracy, laid out during the Porfiriato as a recreational neighbourhood rather than as ordinary city housing. Building spread in the early twentieth century. European enclaves settled in alongside, Spanish and German above all, and Colonia del Valle went on absorbing each transformation the capital passed through as Mexico City reshaped the quarters lying south of downtown.
The parks and wide streets survived.
Where is Colonia del Valle?
Avenida Insurgentes cuts south through the colonia, Narvarte lying across it and Nápoles just west, with Coyoacán further south.
