What is the history of Xochimilco?
Xochimilco grew from farming the lake. Its people raised crops on the chinampas, rectangular island plots staked and mudded into the shallow water, and threaded them with the canals that still carry the trajinera boats. The name means the flower fields.
Spanish friars set the Cathedral of St. Bernard of Siena over the old settlement, yet the chinampa system outlasted the conquest and kept feeding the valley, which is why the canals survive as a working relic of that lake landscape.
