What are the main landmarks in Bragernes?
Bragernes Church, raised in neo-Gothic style in 1871, holds an altarpiece of the Resurrection by Adolph Tidemand. Drammen Theater, by the Swedish architect Emil Victor Langlet, burned in 1993 and was rebuilt as an exact copy. St. Laurentius Church and Spiraltoppen are here too.
Drammens Museum and Strømsgodset Church lie close by.
What is the history of Bragernes?
The name comes from Brakar, a farm that disappeared around 1600. Bragernes grew into a town once timber exports took off in the 1500s, won town privileges in 1715 and in 1811 merged with Strømsø to form Drammen, with Bragernes as the centre. A fire in 1866 destroyed 388 properties and the church.
Where is Bragernes?
Bragernes stretches from Kjøsterud to Strøtvet. Above it rises the Bragernesåsen ridge, replanted with trees from the 1830s after the timber industry had stripped it bare.
