About Bragernes
What are the main landmarks in Bragernes?
Bragernes kirke crowns the square. Standing over the central quarter of Drammen, the church looks down across the river, while Drammens Museum and the old St. Laurentius kirke sit close at hand and the wooded lookout of Spiraltoppen rises on the ridge above. Across the water sits Strømsø kirke.
West toward Strømsgodset stands Strømsgodset kirke.
What is the history of Bragernes?
Bragernes is the northern half of old Drammen. For centuries the trading town on this bank grew apart from Strømsø across the river, each with its own market and parish, until the two banks were joined into one city. Bragernes kept the broad central square and the main church of the north shore.
That church, Bragernes kirke, still crowns the quarter above the river. The centre drew the city's weight. Behind the town the ridge climbs to the lookout at Spiraltoppen, while the institutions Drammen now shares, among them Drammens Museum and the old St. Laurentius kirke, sit within reach of the core.
Across the water the Strømsø side keeps its own Strømsø kirke, and as the central quarter of Drammen kommune, Bragernes remains the heart that the rest of the city of Drammen reads from.
Where is Bragernes?
This is the city centre. Bragernes holds the north bank of central Drammen, facing the Strømsø quarter across the water, with the wooded ridge of Spiraltoppen rising behind it and Strømsgodset off to the west, all within Drammen kommune in south-eastern Norway.
