About Strømsø

What are the main landmarks in Strømsø?

Strømsø kirke names the quarter. The parish church stands at the heart of this eastern bank of Drammen, with Drammens Museum among the institutions close by and St. Laurentius kirke nearby. Across the water sits the Bragernes core and its Bragernes kirke, while west lies Strømsgodset with its Strømsgodset kirke.

What is the history of Strømsø?

Strømsø is one of the towns that became Drammen. Long before the modern city, the trading settlements on each bank of the river grew up separately, and Strømsø held the eastern shore while Bragernes faced it from across the water. The two were joined into a single town, and Strømsø kept its own parish and centre.

Its church, Strømsø kirke, still stands as the quarter's marker. The district carried the eastern trade. Around it the wider city took shape, reaching west toward Strømsgodset and its own Strømsgodset kirke, and gathering the institutions that Drammen now shares, among them Drammens Museum and the old St. Laurentius kirke.

As the eastern core of Drammen, Strømsø remains one of the river quarters that gave the city of Drammen kommune its shape.

Where is Strømsø?

This is the river bank. Strømsø lines the eastern side of central Drammen, facing the Bragernes core across the water, with Strømsgodset to the west and the hillside of Fjell rising to the south, all inside Drammen kommune in south-eastern Norway.
