Where to Stay in Askim, Østfold

Askim is a former mill and factory town in Indre Østfold, in south-eastern Norway (Østlandet).

Where to stay in Askim

The Askim town centre is the obvious base. It draws together the shops, the services and the old red-brick blocks beside Askim kirke, the working heart of the largest town in Indre Østfold. Staying here keeps you on the rail line and the main road through the north-western part of Østfold, with the surrounding farm parishes a short drive out.

Beds are not plentiful. Take a room in the centre first. For a family stop the ground by Østfoldbadet draws people to the indoor water park on the edge of town, a draw for children when the weather turns.

Out beyond the streets the country opens toward Eidsberg and Trøgstad, where farm lodging sits among the fields and the old churches. Choose the centre if you want walkable Askim around you. Pick the rural fringe if you would rather wake among the fields of this part of south-eastern Norway (Østlandet).

Either makes a quiet base in Indre Østfold.

About Askim

What is Askim known for?

Askim is the largest town of Indre Østfold. It grew up as an industrial place on the rail line through the north-western part of Østfold, and its red-brick works long set the rhythm of the town. Askim kirke marks the older centre.

Out from the built-up streets the parishes of Eidsberg, Trøgstad and Heli ring the town, their old stone churches scattered across the farm country of this corner of south-eastern Norway (Østlandet).

What are the main landmarks in Askim?

Old churches mark the parishes around Askim. Askim kirke stands in the town, while the medieval Eidsberg kirke and the heritage-listed Trøgstad kirke anchor the farm parishes nearby, and the smaller Heli kirke serves its own corner. The water park draws families. Østfoldbadet pulls visitors to its indoor pools on the edge of town, and the Folkenborg museum keeps the local story in Eidsberg, across the fields of this part of south-eastern Norway (Østlandet).

What is the history of Askim?

Industry made modern Askim. The town grew from a farm parish into a works town once the rail line crossed the north-western part of Østfold, drawing factories and a brick-built centre to a spot that had carried little more than fields and Askim kirke before. Workers came for the mills.

Red brick rose along the tracks as the plants spread, and the place swelled into the largest town of Indre Østfold while the country around it stayed in farms. The older order survived at the edges. Medieval Eidsberg kirke and the heritage-listed Trøgstad kirke kept the deep history of the surrounding parishes, while the Folkenborg museum in Eidsberg gathered the farm past of the district.

Heli kirke held its own small corner. Through the last century the factory streets of Askim and the old stone churches of Eidsberg, Trøgstad and Heli marked two layers of this corner of south-eastern Norway (Østlandet): the industrial town and the farm parishes that ring it.

Where is Askim?

Askim lies in the north-western part of Østfold, on the rolling farm country of south-eastern Norway (Østlandet). The town gathers on level ground around Askim kirke, its brick streets set among fields that run out to the parishes of Eidsberg, Trøgstad and Heli. Farm and forest fill the wider country.

The land is gentle and low, worked ground threaded by rural roads between the scattered old churches of Indre Østfold.

What is the climate of Askim?

Askim has an inland climate. Lying away from the coast in the north-western part of Østfold, the town sees colder, snowier winters and warmer summers than the shore of south-eastern Norway (Østlandet). The farm country bakes in July.

Heat settles over the fields around Askim kirke and the parishes of Eidsberg and Trøgstad, while the long winters bring frost and snow to the low ground of Indre Østfold.

How do you get to Askim?

Askim sits on the rail line. The railway through the north-western part of Østfold runs through the town that grew up around it, and trains link Askim across south-eastern Norway (Østlandet). The main road follows the tracks.

It carries cars out through the farm parishes toward Eidsberg and Trøgstad, and most visitors reach the other churches and the Folkenborg museum by road from the Askim centre in Indre Østfold.
