Where to stay in Daska
The practical side of choosing where to sleep.
Daska is a working town rather than a hotel base. Sialkot, about 27 kilometres to the north-east, and Gujranwala, about 24 kilometres to the south-west, hold most of the rooms in this part of Punjab, and either makes a practical base. Sialkot also has the nearest airport.
In town, Fuwara Chowk has a restaurant known for its chicken karahi. Keep phones out of sight. Snatching is a known risk in the city, and the roads outside town are best left alone after dark.
About Daska
The name is a measure of distance.
What is Daska known for?
Daska is said to come from das koh, ten koh in the Mughal unit, because the town lies that far from Sialkot, Pasrur, Gujranwala and Wazirabad. Making things is the trade here, with workshops for farm machinery and surgical instruments. Sir Muhammad Zafarullah Khan's family came from Daska.
What are the main landmarks in Daska?
The sights are local ones. The Noor Mosque, Baldia Hall, which serves as the town hall, and the shops of Main Bazar make up the list, which also takes in the Daska Canal and Head Bambian Wala. Alo Mahar Sharif, a shrine town nearby, draws followers of its Sufi saints from far beyond the district.
What is the history of Daska?
Daska began as a Mughal foundation. Mughal revenue records name it Shah Jahanabad, after the emperor Shah Jahan, in whose reign it was founded, and it took the name Daska from the ten koh that separate it from the nearby towns. The Durrani invasions of the eighteenth century ruined it.
Its people sheltered in the mud fort of Kot Daska, and the town filled again in the Sikh era. Ranjit Singh took it into the Sikh Empire in 1802. In 1929 a dispute over the Gurdwara Sant Wayaram Singh, claimed by Akali Sikhs and by local Hindus, turned into riots.
At partition in August 1947 about five thousand refugees gathered at a camp in Daska for two weeks before the Pakistan Army escorted them to the Indian border.
Where is Daska?
Daska lies on the plain of central Punjab at about 220 metres, some 27 kilometres south-west of Sialkot and 24 kilometres north-east of Gujranwala, with Sambrial about 18 kilometres to the north. It is the seat of Daska Tehsil, one of the four tehsils of Sialkot District.
How do you get to Daska?
