Kaliningrad is known for the survivals of old Königsberg.
What is Kaliningrad known for?
The medieval Königsberg Cathedral still stands at the city's core, and a ring of old city gates, among them the Brandenburg Gate, the King's Gate, and the Rossgarten Gate, marks the line of the former walls. Amber draws visitors to the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum. Ships and sea history fill the Museum of the World Ocean.
The past is everywhere in stone.
What are the main landmarks in Kaliningrad?
Kaliningrad keeps a dense set of monuments from its Königsberg past. Königsberg Cathedral is the oldest, marking the medieval heart of the city. A ring of old city gates survives around it, among them the Brandenburg Gate, the King's Gate, the Rossgarten Gate, and the Sackheim Gate.
Fort Friedrichsburg survives from the old defences. The Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum and the Museum of the World Ocean hold the city's major collections, and a monument to Friedrich Schiller stands among them.
What is the history of Kaliningrad?
Kaliningrad began as Königsberg, founded in 1255. For most of its history it was a Prussian and German city, and its surviving buildings still tell that story. Königsberg Cathedral rose in the medieval town as the chief church of old Königsberg.
Later centuries added the ring of city gates, the Königsberg Stock Exchange, and the fortifications of Fort Friedrichsburg. Churches rose across it, among them the Kreuzkirche and Saint Adalbert Church. The Prussian State Archive gathered the province's records, and a monument to Friedrich Schiller marked the city's German cultural life.
Trade centred on the old exchange for centuries. In time the city took the name Kaliningrad and became the seat of Kaliningrad Oblast. The change of name marked a change of era.
Newer landmarks joined the old ones. Victory Square reshaped the civic centre, while the Museum of the World Ocean gathered the maritime collections, the ship Kosmonavt Viktor Patsaev moored among them. The Kaliningrad City Hall and the Regional Museum of History and Arts stand among the civic landmarks.
Baltika Stadium brought sport to the modern city. Old Königsberg and modern Kaliningrad share the same streets.
Where is Kaliningrad?
Kaliningrad is the principal city of Kaliningrad Oblast, laid out around the old core of Königsberg. The ring of surviving gates, the Brandenburg Gate, the King's Gate, and the Rossgarten Gate among them, traces the line the city walls once followed. Fort Friedrichsburg marks another point of the old defences.
The old town holds the centre, and newer districts spread outward from it. The whole sits in the temperate zone.
What is the climate of Kaliningrad?
A temperate climate holds over Kaliningrad. Winters are cold and grey, with short days and frequent cloud, while summers stay mild rather than hot. The seasons turn slowly.
Spring and autumn run long and changeable, wet spells trading with clear over Victory Square and the old gates. Snow comes in the cold months but rarely lingers hard.
How do you get to Kaliningrad?
Kaliningrad is reached most easily by rail, with trains ending at the Kaliningrad Railway station near the centre. From the station the old town and Victory Square lie a short way off. Roads fan out across Kaliningrad Oblast from the city, linking it to the smaller towns of the region.
Most arrive at the centre. City buses and trams carry on from there.
