Königsberg Cathedral commands the district. Its brick-Gothic mass rises on Kant Island in the Pregolya, sheltering the philosopher's tomb at its northeastern corner, and it stands as the most complete survivor of the old Prussian city around it. The Kaliningrad Oblast Museum of Fine Arts occupies the former Königsberg Stock Exchange nearby, its columned river frontage facing the water.
Southward, Ponarth Church marks the brewery quarter. Two brick landmarks bracket the wider borough as well, the Friedland Gates by the old ramparts and the Church of the Holy Family, which now serves the regional philharmonic.
What is the history of Moskovsky Administrative District?
The district gathers up old Königsberg's southern quarters. Kant Island began as Kneiphof, one of the three medieval towns whose merchants raised the Cathedral from the 1330s onward, its brickwork finished around 1380. Beyond the river lay a ring of suburbs.
Ponarth grew fastest: a farming village that turned industrial after Johann Philipp Schifferdecker moved his Bavarian-style brewery there in 1849, drawing workers until the settlement was absorbed into the city in 1905. Rosenau and Haberberg filled in alongside it. Wartime bombing and the 1945 handover to Soviet control gutted much of this fabric, and the surviving gates, churches, and the Cathedral were reconstructed only decades later.
