About Suvorovo Microdistrict
What are the main landmarks in Suvorovo Microdistrict?
Brick defines Suvorovo. Ponarth Church, a tall red-brick Gothic Revival hall from the old German quarter, stands as the district's chief marker, and near it the neo-Gothic St. Joseph's Church holds its own corner of the street grid. The Bust of Alexander Suvorov in Kaliningrad honours the general whose name the district carries.
On the southern rim, Fort VIII in Kaliningrad anchors the wartime ring of forts, while the Kaliningrad port grain elevator towers rise over the rail sidings to the west. Together the church, the fort, and the elevators frame the place.
What is the history of Suvorovo Microdistrict?
Suvorovo was Ponarth. The quarter grew south of the old town as a German industrial suburb around the Ponart brewery, whose brick malt-houses and worker rows pulled in families and gave the district its schools, its church, and its tram line before the war reached it. Ponarth Church rose to serve them.
After the storming of the fortress city in 1945 the ground passed to the Soviet Union, the German name was dropped, and the district took the name of Alexander Suvorov, whose bust still marks its streets.
Where is Suvorovo Microdistrict?
Suvorovo lies on the southern side of Kaliningrad, an inland brick-built quarter reaching from Ponarth Church out past the rail sidings toward Fort VIII in Kaliningrad on the city's ring.
