Gorodok Chekistov was laid out in 1932. The quarter went up as housing for staff of the Cheka, the Soviet security service that gave the district its name, and it belongs to the Constructivist building wave that reshaped Yekaterinburg between the wars. That decade the city itself carried the name Sverdlovsk.
The older Ipatiev House stood in the same city until its demolition, and the Church of All Saints later rose over the ground it had occupied.
