The district takes its name and its shape from the Verkh-Isetsky Plant, an ironworks raised to work Ural ore. Around the plant a settlement grew. Workers' streets, a pond, and a mill dam gathered into a quarter that Yekaterinburg formally set apart as a district in 1919, binding the old factory village to the growing city.
The Church of the Dormition served that population. The forge came first.
