Work began in 1927. Oeralmasj rose as a planned settlement for the Uralmash machine-building works, and the Square of Pervoy Pyatiletki was cut as its formal heart, framed by the Uralmash entrance gate and ranks of workers' housing that fixed the street grid still in use. The plant defined everything that followed.
