Ribersborg grew along the western shore of Malmö as the city reached its housing toward the water. Within the borough of Västra Innerstaden, the seaward ground filled with villas and waterside walks beside swimming grounds such as Simhallsbadet, Malmö, and over the years the strip settled into a green seafront quarter rather than open coast. It opened to the water.
The western edge of Malmö became Ribersborg, a kommun district close to Slottsstaden.
