Västra Innerstaden grew on the ground west of the fortress as Malmö extended past Malmöhus toward the sea. The castle wards came to hold Malmö konstmuseum and Malmö museum, while parishes such as Vår Frälsares kyrka and Sankt Andreas kyrka served the streets that filled the west-central blocks. Then borders shifted.
In 2013 the city district of Västra Innerstaden merged with Södra Innerstaden to form the wider area of Innerstaden inside Malmö kommun.
