Kungsholmen, Stockholm — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Kungsholmen is a district of Stockholm on an island in Lake Mälaren, its western inner-city streets wrapped by water and waterfront paths.

Where to stay in Kungsholmen

Kungsholmen feels lived-in. Hotels gather near Fridhemsplan and along Hantverkargatan, within reach of the City Hall and the long waterfront walk of Norr Mälarstrand, where locals swim off Smedsudden in summer. It is calmer than the centre.

Families like the parks, and Rålambshovsparken runs down to the shore a quick metro hop from the middle of town.

About Kungsholmen

What are the main landmarks in Kungsholmen?

The City Hall sets the scene. Stockholms stadshus raises its square brick tower over Riddarfjärden as host to the Nobel banquet, while the courthouse of Stockholms rådhus and the spire of Sankt Görans kyrka mark the streets inland. Bonniers Konsthall shows contemporary art near Torsgatan.

Långholmen, the old prison island, lies just to the south with its beaches.

What is the history of Kungsholmen?

The island was the king's gift. In the sixteen-hundreds the crown handed it to craftworkers and manufacturers, and tanneries, breweries, and a hospital at Sabbatsberg spread across what had been farmland and grazing. Industry held on for centuries.

The factories later gave way to apartment blocks, and the shoreline became parkland.

Where is Kungsholmen?

The island lies in southern Stockholm, in eastern Sweden, set in Lake Mälaren just north of the bay of Riddarfjärden.
