About Vasastaden
What are the main landmarks in Vasastaden?
Culture here leans intimate. Sankt Johannes kyrka stands on its wooded rise toward the centre, while Sankt Matteus kyrka anchors the streets to the north. Art lovers find Sven-Harrys konstmuseum and Bonniers Konsthall near Vasaparken, and the sculptor's studio at Carl Eldhs Ateljémuseum sits among the trees of Bellevueparken.
At Dalagatan, Astrid Lindgrens hem keeps the writer's apartment.
What is the history of Vasastaden?
Vasastaden grew late. As Stockholm pushed north in the closing decades of the nineteenth century, engineers laid a regular grid over former gardens and tobacco fields, and stone tenements rose block by block for a swelling middle class. The name recalls the Vasa kings.
Earlier, the springs at Sabbatsberg had drawn the sick and the elderly to the area's edge.
Where is Vasastaden?
The district sits in northern Stockholm, in eastern Sweden, bordering Östermalm along Birger Jarlsgatan and reaching toward Kungsholmen in the south-west.
