What are the main landmarks in Östermalm?
Grandeur is the theme. Strandvägen runs its line of ornate facades along the water, while Hedvig Eleonora kyrka and Oscarskyrkan rise over the inner blocks and Sturebadet keeps its tiled baths off Stureplan. The Nationalmuseum and the cruise quays lie at the district's edge.

What is the history of Östermalm?
The district was once pasture. Known as Ladugårdslandet, the royal cattle grounds, it was rebuilt from the eighteen-eighties under a grand plan of straight boulevards and uniform stone blocks meant to rival the capitals of the continent. The army drilled at Ladugårdsgärdet.
The name Östermalm arrived with the new and deliberately elegant streets.
