About Södermalm

What are the main landmarks in Södermalm?

The cliffs do the work. Fotografiska draws crowds to its photography shows on the eastern shore, while the towers of Sofia kyrka and the brick of Maria Magdalena kyrka mark the heights above Slussen. Footpaths at Fjällgatan and Skinnarviksberget open over the whole bay.

The Cornelis Vreeswijk museet keeps the songwriter's legacy.

What is the history of Södermalm?

Söder was long the workers' island. Where stonecutters, dockhands, and craftspeople once crowded wooden houses on the heights, the twentieth century brought tenements and then a slow turn toward studios, galleries, and small publishers. Fire shaped it more than once.

The old lanes south of Folkungagatan, now called SoFo, keep the tight scale of that earlier town.

Where is Södermalm?

Söder fills southern Stockholm in eastern Sweden, an island of steep northern bluffs falling to Riddarfjärden, linked to Gamla Stan at Slussen.
