About Spodnja Šiška
What are the main landmarks in Spodnja Šiška?
St. Bartholomew's Church, the Old Church, was built in the 13th century and remodelled by Jože Plečnik between 1933 and 1938. Plečnik's church of St. Francis stands in the district too. So do the Union Brewery, Tivoli Hall, Cekin Mansion, and part of Tivoli Park, while Tivoli Castle, once on village land, now belongs to Ljubljana Center.
What is the history of Spodnja Šiška?
Šiška appears in 1308 as ze Cheis, from *Hiška, a little house, after a single small house said to have stood here. The old village core lay between Ulica Milana Majcna, once St. Bartholomew Street, and Gasilska cesta. In 1382 a peace treaty between the Republic of Venice and Leopold III of Habsburg was signed in front of St. Bartholomew's Church.
The Carniolan assembly gave the Tivoli Castle parcels to Ljubljana on 22 January 1886. Ljubljana annexed the village in 1914.
