About Spodnja Šiška

Where to stay in Spodnja Šiška

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Rooms here divide between the hill and the road. Hotel Bellevue stands among the trees on Šišenski hrib, well above the yards and low blocks of Spodnja Šiška, while the plainer beds sit along Celovška cesta and its bus stops. Tivoli Hall and the Ljubljana-Šiška railway station both fall inside the quarter.

Take a room here if you want the park paths before breakfast and a short ride into the centre after it.

About Spodnja Šiška

What are the main landmarks in Spodnja Šiška?

The old church came first. St. Bartholomew's church, the Stara cerkev of the village, stands by Ulica Milana Majcna where Spodnja Šiška kept its centre, and the Habsburgs signed Trieste back to Venice in front of it in 1370. Plečnik answered it with St. Francis of Assisi, a square-plan church on brick columns, begun in 1925 and on the UNESCO world heritage list since 2021.

The Slovenian Railway Museum fills the old roundhouse beside the Ljubljana-Šiška railway station. Unionexperience MUSEUM sits inside the Union Brewery, and Cekin Mansion, at the Tivoli park edge, holds the National Museum of Contemporary History.

What is the history of Spodnja Šiška?

Spodnja Šiška ran its own municipality before Ljubljana took it in. The name is written down in 1370 as inferior Keissach, in the peace agreed at Šiška, and Upper Carniola counted the place among its villages. Then the city began taking pieces.

On 22 January 1886 the Carniolan assembly cut the Tivoli Castle parcels out of the municipality and handed them to Ljubljana, which is why the castle now stands outside the district, and the International Centre of Graphic Arts that occupies it answers to Ljubljana Center. Celovška cesta 62 survives from the village years. The Central Slovenia Statistical Region holds the district now.

Where is Spodnja Šiška?

Spodnja Šiška covers the northwest part of Ljubljana, running from the woods of Šišenski hrib down across Celovška cesta to the railway.
