Baramkeh took its name from the Barmakids. The quarter was laid out in the late 19th century under Ottoman rule, on ground west of the old walled core of Damascus, and it grew through the 20th century into a hub of learning and long-distance transport as the Damascus University campus and the Garaj Baramkeh station rose along University Street. It began outside the walls.
