What are the main landmarks in Barza?

The October War Panorama is the draw that pulls outsiders toward this side of Damascus. Opened in 1998, this national museum stages the 1973 war in a circular painted scene and stands closer to Barza than to the tourist lanes of the old city. Its name carries the month.

Syrians also call it the Tishreen War Panorama, and for many visitors it is the single reason to head north through Damascus toward Barza rather than to linger in the historic centre.

What is the history of Barza?

Barza is old ground, joined late. A village of the Ghouta on the northern edge of Damascus, founded at least in Roman times, with Roman and Aramean tombs found by villagers, it was recorded in an Ottoman tax register in 1535 with 38 households and absorbed into Damascus at the end of the 1950s. Its farms grew rice, olives and fruit, and olive groves remain.

The October War Panorama, the national museum opened in 1998 to mark the fighting of 1973, ties this northern edge to a memory the wider city keeps, and it anchors an otherwise ordinary residential quarter to something known well beyond Barza itself.
