Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Beds cluster where the offices are. Mueang Uttaradit District is the capital district of Uttaradit Province, and the streets that grew out of Bang Pho hold the government business, the produce trade, and most of the rooms a traveller will find. That concentration suits a short stay.
If you are here on provincial business, or breaking the long run north from Bangkok, the district centre puts the offices and the road within the same few blocks. Bang Pho is the older name for the same ground, and the change of label did not move the centre of things. The temple side is the other choice.
Wat Khung Taphao stands apart from the office streets, and a room out that way trades the convenience of the capital district for a quieter approach to the statues of King Taksin and Phraya Phichai Dap Hak. Range is narrow either way. Travellers who want a wider choice of rooms usually look to Phitsanulok to the south, or to Lampang to the north-west, and treat Uttaradit as a stop between them rather than a base. Nan lies north-east, smaller again. Phichit sits further down the same southern road, and Phetchabun off to the south-east, each far enough that choosing a bed there means a different trip.

That arrangement ended when Uttaradit Province was established and Bang Pho District was made its capital district, which put the seat of government on ground that had until then answered to a neighbour. The name followed the promotion. Bang Pho District became Mueang Uttaradit District, and the town and the province have shared a name since.
Distance shaped the rest. Uttaradit stands 483 km north of Bangkok, far enough from the capital that provincial administration had to be real work rather than a formality, and the town has carried that load for Uttaradit Province since. Trade sat alongside it.

The monsoon sets the year here. Uttaradit lies well inland in lower northern Thailand, out of reach of any sea breeze, so the wet months arrive on the southwest monsoon and the dry stretch that follows runs long and warm. Heat is the constant.
Cooler air reaches the northern provinces late in the year, and Uttaradit Province feels that more than the country nearer Bangkok does, though the shift is modest rather than a change of season.
How do you get to Uttaradit?
Most arrivals come up from the south. The run from Bangkok is 483 km, and it passes Phichit and Phitsanulok before the road reaches Uttaradit, which makes Phitsanulok the nearest place of any size at which to break the journey. Nan lies off to the north-east.
Lampang sits to the north-west on the way toward Chiang Mai, and from the town itself the province roads carry on out to Mueang Uttaradit District and the temple ground at Wat Khung Taphao.
