Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Esenyurt is a place people pass through on the way somewhere else, and the two roads that define it, the TEM road on the north side, the E-5 motorway on the south, are the reason anyone books a room in it at all. Access is the whole argument. Rooms near the E-5 motorway put Beylikdüzü and the coast within a short drive, while the northern edge along the TEM road suits anyone heading for Başakşehir or Arnavutköy.
The middle holds the shops. East is where the sights are. Lake Küçükçekmece and the ancient site of Bathonea sit on that side beyond Avcılar, and the Galatasaray Küçükçekmece Rowing Center works the same water, which makes the eastern streets of Esenyurt the practical base for a day spent out there.
Museum days run the other way, since the Istanbul Robot Museum, the Mehmet Arsay Klasik Otomobil Müzesi and the Çikolata Müzesi are spread across the neighbouring districts rather than gathered in one quarter. Central İstanbul is a longer haul. If you want central İstanbul rather than a working district with good road links, sleep there instead and treat Esenyurt as the practical night beside the motorway.

What is Esenyurt known for?
The TEM road runs along the northern boundary of Esenyurt and the E-5 motorway along the southern one, with Lake Küçükçekmece and Avcılar to the east and Büyükçekmece to the west. Between them sit the museums. The Istanbul Robot Museum, the Mehmet Arsay Klasik Otomobil Müzesi and the Haluk Perk Müzesi are among the collections within reach, and the ancient site of Bathonea lies over by the lake.
What are the main landmarks in Esenyurt?
Bathonea is the oldest name on the list. The ancient site lies beside Lake Küçükçekmece, and the churches of the wider area, the ruins of the Halkalı Church, the Küçükçekmece Aya Yorgi Kilisesi and the ancient ruins of the Büyükçekmece Church, carry the same long record of settlement. Newer collections crowd around.
The Istanbul Robot Museum, the Haluk Perk Müzesi, the Geological Museum at Istanbul University Cerrahpasa and the Museum of World Costumes are within the same reach, with the Endem TV Tower and the Cyprus Monument standing further west.
What is the history of Esenyurt?
The ground is older than the district. Bathonea, the ancient settlement excavated beside Lake Küçükçekmece, lies just off Esenyurt's eastern boundary, and the ruined churches scattered across this corner of İstanbul Province point to centuries of occupation before any modern district line was drawn. The Küçükçekmece Aya Yorgi Kilisesi survives from that older layer, as do the ancient ruins of the Halkalı Church.
Stone survives; paperwork follows. Esenyurt itself dates from 2008. That year set the district and municipality in their present form inside İstanbul Province, on the European side, with Avcılar and Lake Küçükçekmece to the east, Büyükçekmece to the west, Başakşehir and Arnavutköy to the north and Beylikdüzü to the south.
Roads did the shaping. The TEM road along the north and the E-5 motorway along the south fixed the frame within which Esenyurt filled out, and Turkey's administrative map records it as one district among many on that side of İstanbul. Museums came with the building.
The Museum of World Costumes, the Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum, the Mehmet Arsay Klasik Otomobil Müzesi and the Beylikdüzü Nostalji Müzesi all lie within a short run of the district.
Where is Esenyurt?
Boundaries here are drawn by traffic. Esenyurt occupies a stretch of the European side of İstanbul with the TEM road along its northern limit and the E-5 motorway along its southern one, Lake Küçükçekmece and Avcılar off to the east, and Büyükçekmece to the west. Başakşehir and Arnavutköy close the north; Beylikdüzü closes the south.
Nothing about it is remote.
What is the climate of Esenyurt?
Esenyurt sits in the temperate band, set back from the water on the European side of İstanbul, so the seasons here arrive in full rather than being flattened by a coastline at the door. Lake Küçükçekmece is the nearest large body of water. Its effect is local.
Summer heat builds over the built-up ground between the TEM road and the E-5 motorway, and winter brings the grey, wet spell that the whole European side of İstanbul shares.
How do you get to Esenyurt?
Two motorways do the work. The E-5 motorway runs along the southern edge of Esenyurt and the TEM road along the northern, which puts the district between the two roads that carry traffic west out of İstanbul and makes arrival by road straightforward from either direction. Neighbours are a short hop.
Avcılar and Lake Küçükçekmece lie immediately east, Büyükçekmece west, Beylikdüzü south, and Başakşehir and Arnavutköy north beyond the TEM road.
