About Fatih

Hagia Sophia stands here.

What is Fatih known for?

Fatih covers the historical peninsula of İstanbul, so Topkapı Palace, the Istanbul Archaeology Museums and the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum fall inside one district, several of them ranked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is old Constantinople. The Chora Church, the Zeyrek Mosque and the Şehzade Mosque mark the successive layers of the peninsula.

What are the main landmarks in Fatih?

Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace anchor the eastern end of the peninsula, with Hagia Irene and the Istanbul Archaeology Museums close by. Churches run deep. The Chora Church, the Pammakaristos Church, the Little Hagia Sophia, the Zeyrek Mosque and the Bodrum Mosque trace the peninsula's long succession of buildings, while the Walled Obelisk and the Golden Gate survive from its ceremonial and defensive lines.

Museum collections round it off. The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, the Great Palace Mosaic Museum and the Panorama 1453 History Museum share the district with Beyazıt Tower.

What is the history of Fatih?

Constantinople stood on this ground. Fatih covers the historical peninsula, the oldest part of İstanbul, and its western limit is still marked by the Theodosian wall, whose Golden Gate survives at that end. Hagia Sophia, Hagia Irene and the Little Hagia Sophia belong to that older city, as do the Chora Church, the Pammakaristos Church and the Walled Obelisk on the old ceremonial ground.

Mosques followed. The Şehzade Mosque, the Zeyrek Mosque, the Bodrum Mosque, the Fenari Isa Mosque and the Koça Mustafa Pasha Mosque stand across the same peninsula, and Topkapı Palace holds its eastern end. The modern district dates from 1930.

Fatih took its municipal form then, and in 2009 the neighbouring district of Eminönü, which had been a separate municipality at the tip of the peninsula, was remerged into it. Almost all of the provincial authorities sit within Fatih, the courthouse excepted. Several of the peninsula's sights are ranked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum and the Great Palace Mosaic Museum hold much of what has been dug from the ground beneath them. Turkey keeps its record here.

The Panorama 1453 History Museum and the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum carry later chapters, and Beyazıt Tower still stands over the district.

Where is Fatih?

Water surrounds three sides. The Golden Horn forms the northern boundary of Fatih and the Sea of Marmara the southern, while the Bosphorus Strait closes the east and the Theodosian wall marks the west, which leaves the district as a walled peninsula inside İstanbul Province. It is compact ground.

Everything from Topkapı Palace at the eastern tip to the Golden Gate in the wall belongs to the same historical peninsula.

What is the climate of Fatih?

Two seas work on the peninsula. The Sea of Marmara on the south and the Bosphorus Strait on the east keep Fatih's air moving, and the Golden Horn on the north side draws the same damp through the streets below the Zeyrek Mosque. Winter is wet and grey.

Summer heat is heavier inland than it is on the water side, which is why the shaded courtyards around the Şehzade Mosque and Hagia Sophia fill up in the middle of the day.

How do you get to Fatih?

Arrival is across water or through the wall. Fatih occupies the historical peninsula, so anything coming from the north crosses the Golden Horn, anything from the east crosses the Bosphorus Strait, and traffic from the west passes the line of the Theodosian wall. Eminönü sits at the tip.

Inside the district the distances are walking distances, which is how most visitors take Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Istanbul Archaeology Museums in one day.
