What are the main landmarks in Wenshan District?
Taipei Zoo anchors Wenshan and pulls most of the district's visitors up from the basin. It is the big draw here: a sprawling zoological park tucked into the southern hills of Taipei, the single landmark that gives this otherwise residential quarter a place on the city's sightseeing map, set well back from the crowded centre of the Taipei Basin. The zoo does the work.

What is the history of Wenshan District?
Wenshan was constituted as a district of Taipei in 1990, when the city merged two older southern boroughs into one hillside administration on the edge of the Taipei Basin. The name is far older than the boundary. Long before the district lines were drawn, Wenshan referred loosely to the whole tract of country south of the basin, the hill region that fed tea and timber down into the growing city of Taipei.
The name outlived the frontier.
Where is Wenshan District?
Wenshan spreads across the hilly ground south of the Taipei Basin, the farthest of Taipei's twelve districts from the flat city centre and the last of them before the ridges climb away toward the mountains of southern Taiwan. The land tilts upward here. This quarter covers roughly 32 square kilometres of slope and valley, a subtropical stretch of forested hillside where the built-up parts of Wenshan give way to green ridges rather than the dense grid of the basin floor.
