The city dates from 1887. That founding sits well before the attraction the name is attached to, and a long way before Buena Park was absorbed into the built-up Los Angeles metropolitan area that surrounds it. Agriculture preceded the rides.

Walter and Cordelia Knott worked the ground that became Knott's Berry Farm, and the name kept the word farm long after the crops had stopped being the reason anyone drove out to Buena Park. Its position between Los Angeles and San Diego made it a stop on the way through, which is much of what the attraction trade later built on. What followed was built in layers.

The Japanese Village and Deer Park belongs to the mid-century wave of roadside attractions that grew from the same trade, and the rides logged since then read as a long sequence of additions to one site rather than as separate ventures. Water came later. Knott's Soak City opened a second gate, Knott's Scary Farm turned the seasonal calendar into an event of its own, and the Pony Express, the Coast Rider and the Timberline Twister kept the western theming that the farm name implies.

Around all of it the Los Angeles metropolitan area closed in, until the boundary with the neighbouring cities became administrative rather than visible. Santa Ana kept the county offices.
