Where to stay in Calabasas

Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.

Calabasas strings its neighbourhoods along a few roads through the foothills. Old Town Calabasas holds the Leonis Adobe, and the Calabasas Farmers Market meets every Saturday on Calabasas Road. Technology firms line Agoura Road.

Its stretch beside US 101 became the 101 Technology Corridor, the address for a work trip. Las Virgenes Road leads to the King Gillette Ranch, part of Malibu Creek State Park, at its junction with Mulholland Highway, the road for a trip built around the hills. Park Moderne, the Bird Streets behind Calabasas High School, is one of the oldest neighbourhoods, a former artists' colony whose clubhouse, pool, and cabins survive in part.

About Calabasas

Calabasas takes its name from the Spanish for squashes.

The name is an old Californio spelling of calabazas, the word for the winter squashes that grew wild in the area, and the botanist Jose Longinos Martinez recorded Las Calabazas as a place name in 1792.

The Chumash and Tongva lived for thousands of years in the San Fernando Valley, where Calabasas lies, before the Spanish came. By 1795 Calabasas was the name of a ranchería in the area.

Hollywood used the hills later: the Warner Bros. Ranch, where Calabasas Park Golf Club lies, was the set for High Noon, Calamity Jane, and Stalag 17 in the 1950s. Calabasas incorporated on April 5, 1991.

Annexations, Mont Calabasas among them in 2011, have since brought it to about 35 square kilometres.
