Los Angeles County spread outwards over the century that followed, and El Monte ended up inside the continuous built area running east from Los Angeles. The nineteenth century left the houses. Family estates left records too. The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum holds one such record, and the Hermitage and the House at 674 Elliot Drive belong to the same run of preserved addresses. Congregations arrived as the city filled.
