The Coast Highway is the spine. Encinitas runs its main street along that road, and a room within reach of it puts the beach, the city name sign at the Carlsbad end and most of the town's shopfronts inside a walk. Beach days start there.
Anything else means a drive across the 52 square kilometres the city covers between Solana Beach and Carlsbad. Olivenhain pulls inland. The Olivenhain Town Meeting Hall and Bumann Ranch belong to the farming side of Encinitas rather than to the surf, and a bed out there trades the water for quiet and easier parking.
Fairbanks Ranch Country Club is the other inland draw. Legoland California, the Craftsmanship Museum and the Museum of Making Music all suit a car rather than a walk, so a room back from the shore gives up less than it first appears. San Diego is the fallback.
The city lies about 25 miles south of Encinitas and Los Angeles about 95 miles north, so a coastal base here reaches in either direction without a long day at the wheel.
