Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Palmdale is a suburban city, and its rooms follow suburban logic: they sit along the commercial ground of the Antelope Valley rather than around a historic core. The city covers a lot of desert. That means a room's value here is measured in driving minutes to the airparks, the raceway or the road south through the San Gabriel Mountains, and not in what lies immediately outside the door.
Blackbird Airpark and Joe Davies Heritage Airpark sit close together, so one base covers both. Families tend to land near Dry Town Water Park, which handles the Mojave Desert summer better than any room does, and the surrounding blocks carry the ordinary suburban stock of Los Angeles County. Racing brings its own crowd.
Los Angeles County Raceway pulls people out onto the desert floor for events, and beds fill on those weekends further from the centre than they otherwise would. The mountains matter for a different reason. Anything south of Palmdale means crossing the San Gabriel Mountains into the Los Angeles Basin, so you stay here if the valley is the destination and drive if it is not.

The date on record is 1886. What grew after it took the flat ground of the Antelope Valley, a stretch of the Mojave Desert held apart from the rest of Los Angeles County by the San Gabriel Mountains, and that separation shaped everything which followed. The Antelope Valley belongs to Southern California, but its ground is desert rather than coast.
Distance did the early work. The mountains stand between Palmdale and the Los Angeles Basin, so the city never simply merged into the metropolis on the far side of the range. Aviation changed the register.
