Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Valencia holds most of the beds. It is the piece of Santa Clarita planned hardest and built last, and it lies closest to Six Flags Magic Mountain, which makes it the default for anyone whose trip is really a trip to the park and to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles beside it. Summer rooms there go early.
Book accordingly. The other three read differently. Newhall keeps a street of its own that works on foot, in a city otherwise arranged around arterials; Saugus is residential ground along the Santa Clara River; Canyon Country runs out toward Agua Dulce, where the valley floor gives way to open land.
None of the four sits far from the others. The whole municipality covers roughly 183 square kilometres, and crossing from Newhall to Canyon Country counts as a short drive by the standards of Los Angeles County. The last variable is Los Angeles itself.
Downtown is about 30 miles (48 km) south-east, near enough that some visitors sleep in the Santa Clarita Valley and drive into Greater Los Angeles for the day, trading a downtown base for easy parking and quieter nights. Come for the coasters and you want Valencia, within sight of the gate. Come for the valley and Newhall is the better address, with Castaic, Stevenson Ranch, and Val Verde as fallbacks when the city is full.

What is Santa Clarita known for?
Six Flags Magic Mountain stands inside the city with a line-up that runs through Twisted Colossus, Goliath, Tatsu, and X², and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles takes the overflow once the heat sets in. The city is younger than its streets. Santa Clarita incorporated in 1987 from Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia, four communities of the Santa Clarita Valley that had already grown into one another.

What is the history of Santa Clarita?
This is a city by agreement rather than by age. Newhall, Saugus, Valencia, and Canyon Country stood as separate communities along the Santa Clara River long before 1987, the year they incorporated together and gave the Santa Clarita Valley a single municipal government where there had been four sets of local arrangements and none. The names carry the older layers.
Each of the four kept its own centre through the merger, and the unincorporated satellites nearby, Castaic, Stevenson Ranch, Val Verde, and Agua Dulce, stayed outside the new city line, which is why the valley still reads as a cluster of communities rather than one continuous place. The river shaped the ground and supplied the water. The road out to Los Angeles supplied everything after that.
Growth arrived along that road. Santa Clarita turned into a textbook edge city, a place that acquires shopping, offices, and a theme park before it acquires a downtown, and Six Flags Magic Mountain pulled visitors up into a valley in north-western Los Angeles County that had been ranch land within living memory. The classification stuck: a satellite city, a boomburb, a suburb of Greater Los Angeles that outgrew the label.
Incorporation in 1987 simply caught up with the fact on the ground.

Inside the city, Newhall, Saugus, Valencia, and Canyon Country sit minutes apart by car, and the outlying settlements of Castaic and Agua Dulce want a car as well.
