Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The State Street Commercial Historic District is one anchor; the Chicago line is the other. Rooms near the historic district put the older streets, First Baptist Church, and the George John Wolf House within walking distance, and they suit a visitor who wants Hammond itself rather than a base chosen only for its nearness to Chicago. The border does most of the choosing.
Hammond sits at the edge of the Chicago metropolitan area, so many travellers take a room here and spend their days in the larger city, treating Lake County as the quieter place to sleep. Lake Michigan lies along the other side. The lakeshore end of Hammond is a different proposition from the streets around the Mascot Hall of Fame, and anyone travelling with children will find that museum the deciding factor.
Chicago is always the alternative. Beds are more plentiful across the state line, and the trade-off is the usual one between choice on the Chicago side and quiet in northern Lake County, where the Ibach House and the Henry and Caroline Schrage House stand on residential streets. Lansing Country Club sits out that way as well.

What is the history of Hammond?
Hammond dates its founding to 1884. Settlement had begun earlier, in the middle of the nineteenth century, which makes this one of the oldest cities of northern Lake County. The George John Wolf House and the Henry and Caroline Schrage House survive from that period, along with the Ibach House and the Stallbohm Barn-Kaske House, and together they record families who held ground before the industrial era.
Factories followed. Industry drew the city into the Chicago orbit, and the Republic Steel Memorial Day Massacre Sculpture stands as the public memorial to one episode of that period. Commerce concentrated on State Street.
The State Street Commercial Historic District preserves that front, and First Baptist Church belongs to the same decades of building. Lake Michigan lies along one edge, and the Chicago metropolitan area eventually absorbed Hammond into a wider whole without erasing the older street grid. The Mascot Hall of Fame is a much later arrival.
Fireworks shops came with the border trade, one of the reasons Chicagoans cross at all. Chicagoland runs across the state line, and Hammond is the piece of Indiana that touches it directly.
Where is Hammond?
Lake County holds the city. Hammond lies along Lake Michigan on the Indiana side of the Chicago boundary, the only city in the state to share that border, and Chicago's Far Southeast Side begins immediately across the line. Northern Lake County spreads inland from there.
The Chicago metropolitan area takes it all in. State Street runs through the middle of the older part of Hammond.
What is the climate of Hammond?
Lake Michigan does the work here. Winds off the water hold Hammond's spring back while the lake is still cold, then keep the first frosts at bay later than they arrive further inland, and snow off the lake is a normal part of the Lake County winter. Summer is warm and humid.
Grey months outnumber bright ones between the turn of the year and the thaw.
How do you get to Hammond?
Most arrivals come through Chicago. Hammond borders Chicago's Far Southeast Side directly, so anyone flying into the metropolitan area finishes the journey with a short crossing of the state line rather than a separate trip into Indiana. Lake County roads take it from there.
State Street and the older centre sit a few minutes from the boundary, and the Mascot Hall of Fame is the destination most visitors are aiming for.
