It lies back from the Mississippi River, behind the older Carrollton streets. The streets are quiet and low-rise. Most people know it as the 17th Ward neighborhood where the rapper Lil Wayne grew up.

For a fuller choice of beds, most travellers look to Uptown proper or the Central Business District. Base here for calm, not for sightseeing.

Hollygrove is mostly houses, not monuments. Its sights sit just beyond the neighborhood's edges. The nearest is Mater Dolorosa Church, whose tower rises over South Carrollton Avenue in adjacent Carrollton.
A short way toward the river, Tulane University's Uptown campus holds the Newcomb Art Gallery, Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, and John Ryan Stadium. First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans stands on the Uptown side, and long before any of it the Crescent City Base Ball Park drew crowds to this corner of the city.
What is the history of Hollygrove?
Hollygrove grew in the early twentieth century, filling the low ground behind Carrollton, an older river town that New Orleans annexed in 1874. The houses spread inland as the 17th Ward built out. Most of it stayed working-class.
Its streets flooded badly when the levees failed during Hurricane Katrina. The rapper Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Michael Carter, grew up on these streets and carried the neighborhood's name into his music.
Where is Hollygrove?
Hollygrove occupies the far upriver corner of Uptown, hard against the Jefferson Parish line. Monticello Avenue traces that parish boundary, while Airline Highway and the Palmetto Canal frame the neighborhood's other edges. Carrollton sits on the river side, nearer the Mississippi and the streetcar that runs down South Carrollton Avenue.
