The Lower Ninth Ward is the downriver, easternmost neighborhood of New Orleans, cut off from the rest of the city by the Industrial Canal. It makes up the lower half of the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, reaching east to the parish line with St Bernard Parish. The district is working-class and residential. Far beyond Louisiana, its name became shorthand for the 2005 flood that followed the failure of the canal floodwall.

From there, the Mississippi River and central New Orleans are minutes away. Come here for calm, not convenience.

The Lower Ninth Ward is residential, and it carries few conventional sights of its own. Its most recognizable feature is the Industrial Canal floodwall, whose 2005 failure still shows on the landscape as rebuilt blocks, vacant lots, and raised houses. The grassy Mississippi River levee along the southern edge draws walkers and cyclists.
For museums and galleries, look across the canal to the French Quarter and central New Orleans. Little here is built for tourists.
What is the history of Lower Ninth Ward?
The land here was among the last parts of New Orleans to be drained and settled, because it lay low and far downriver. Development came slowly through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, filling in as a working-class quarter of small wooden houses. The Industrial Canal, dug in the 1920s, cut the neighborhood off from the Upper Ninth Ward.
In 2005 the canal floodwall gave way during Hurricane Katrina, and the flood that poured through destroyed most of the district. Recovery came block by block.
Where is Lower Ninth Ward?
Water defines the district on three sides. The Mississippi River curves along its southern levee, while the Industrial Canal walls off its western side from the Upper Ninth Ward and the rest of New Orleans. To the north lie the wetlands of Bayou Bienvenue.
Eastward, the parish line closes the neighborhood off against St Bernard Parish.
