The Cathedral of Saint Mary marks the centre. Downtown Saint Cloud keeps the older street grid beside the Mississippi River, and rooms in that quarter put the cathedral, the river bank and the Michael Majerus House within a short walk of one another. Everything sits within a few blocks.
Nothing about this centre demands a car for the evening, which is the strongest argument for taking a bed here rather than further out in Stearns County. Campus life makes the second option. St. Cloud State University sits on its own ground, with Husky Stadium and Rox Park close to the student streets, and a stay on that side suits you if the trip is about a game, a term or a visit to somebody enrolled.
Term dates decide how full those streets feel. The College of St. Benedict and St. John's University lie outside the city, so a room in Saint Cloud also works for anyone with business at either of them. Three named houses sit apart from both.

What is the history of Saint Cloud?
The name came from France. Saint Cloud takes it from Saint-Cloud, a suburb of Paris that carries the name of Clodoald, a monk of the sixth century, and the city on the Mississippi River kept the borrowing when it was founded in 1856. Settlement followed the water.
Stearns County holds the county seat here, and the city later spread across its line into Benton and Sherburne counties. Building came in the settled decades. The Michael Majerus House, the Foley-Brower-Bohmer House and the Leonard Robinson House survive from the years when Saint Cloud was filling out its residential streets, and the John N. Bensen House belongs with them.
Faith built larger. The Cathedral of Saint Mary gave the Catholic congregations of Stearns County a church on a scale the young river town would not otherwise have attempted. Schools followed the churches.
St. Cloud State University and St Cloud Technical College turned the city into a college town, while the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University added their own weight from just outside, and orthopedic medicine grew into the other trade the place is known for.
