Brookside splits its stays along two edges. The Brookside Shopping District is the walkable center, close enough to reach on foot from most of the blocks between 55th Street and Gregory, and it is the reason to give up a downtown room for one out here. Ward Parkway is the other choice.
Its side streets run past the Bernard Corrigan House and the Walter E. Bixby House, and they stay quiet after dark.

The National Toy and Miniature Museum is the public draw here. Fourteen of its listed landmarks are houses. The Bernard Corrigan House, the Epperson House, the Tom Pendergast House and the Mack B. Nelson House were built as private homes and are listed as landmarks in their own right, which is why a walk through Brookside reads as a run of frontages rather than a circuit of monuments.

Brookside's history is written in deeds rather than charters. The Charles A. Braley House, the George E. Nicholson House, the Hunter Gary House and the Burnette-Berry House each entered the landmark record on their own merits, so the district's account is the sum of separate entries rather than a single founding act. Troost marks the eastern edge.
