East Village keeps almost no beds of its own, so the practical base is the wider downtown, where Barney Allis Plaza and the 21c Museum Hotel Kansas City anchor a hotel belt a few blocks west. Ilus W. Davis Park is the divider. West of it stand the office towers and nearly all the rooms, while east of it the blocks go quiet, which suits anyone content to walk in for the museums and walk back out at night.

Davis Park sets the western limit, and beyond it downtown Kansas City lines up its collections, from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to the Grand Avenue Temple and the National World War I Memorial. Science City at Union Station takes an afternoon. The American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum sit further east, and the Arabia Steamboat Museum and the Kansas City Garment District Museum cover the smaller corners of the city's record.
What is the history of East Village?
The record here is written in houses. Maj. William Warner House, the Joseph Grear Peppard House, the Frank M. Howe Residence and the Philip E. Chappell House all survive from the decades when the blocks north-east of City Hall were a residential quarter.
The Independence Boulevard Christian Church and Sacred Heart Church, School and Rectory served the families who filled them, while Exposition Park and the Christian Church Hospital mark the same stretch of the century.
